European Parliament MPs decided to endorse an effective EU ban on selling new petrol and diesel automobiles beginning in 2035, rejecting efforts to modify the idea to accelerate Europe’s transition to electric vehicles.

Last year, the European Commission proposed requiring a 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from new automobiles by 2035, making it illegal to sell fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the EU beyond that date.

By 2035, all new automobiles and vans must have zero tailpipe emissions.

The legislative package, which includes a proposed EU ban on combustion-engine cars in 2035, aims to reduce Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

The European Parliament will vote on stricter pollution reductions for power plants, industry, airlines, and automobiles.
